Last year at Christmas time, The Wessex Conference Centre had an inspiring idea that benefited struggling families in Africa. This Christmas, they will be doing exactly the same.
Instead of producing the usual Christmas cards for their vast client base,
paying for the production and covering the postage costs, the caring staff
at this innovative venue decided that the money could be better spent helping
those in need. So, having contacted a company called ‘World Vision’,
Eileen Bolton and her team decided to buy a herd of goats and many blankets
for families in the very poorest parts of this vast continent. The herd
of goats provides, not only milk, cream and cheese, but also more goats!
And no butts about it, the families in countries like Zambia and Angola
would have been overjoyed to receive this gift. The blankets bought by
The Wessex Conference Centre can also literally save lives by providing
vital warmth for children and adults living with HIV and AIDS in Africa.
Secure in the knowledge that these gifts, unlike Christmas cards or corporate presents, would not gather dust, this year they have decided to donate once again. Five fruit trees will be provided to produce an income for five poor families and improve their diet year after year. In addition, eight mosquito nets are being sent. Mosquitoes are not simply a nuisance in Africa, they spread malaria, which kills two million people every year – most of them children under five years of age. This life saving gift screens children and adults from the potentially fatal effect of mosquito bites. Finally, staff at The Wessex Conference Centre have donated a flock of sheep to help those in areas like Ethiopia and Albania earn an income, enjoy regular food and better health – and have means by which to educate their children.
Every life-changing gift will make the difference to the lives of thousands of men, woman and children living in poverty during what should be such a festive season. And staff at The Wessex Conference Centre certainly feel that this is the right thing to do at Christmas.
Clients who would normally receive a pretty card at this time of year, will all be emailed with the details, and new clients will be informed when brochures are mailed out. So, on behalf of The Wessex Conference Centre, the staff would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
